Travel Southeast Asia With Confidence

Hi, I'm Yolanda from South Africa — the voice behind Travel Tannies. For more than 15 years my husband and I have been exploring Southeast Asia — from temple towns in Thailand to quiet fishing villages in Vietnam and hidden beaches in Bali. Along the way we made plenty of mistakes, learned a lot, and discovered the places that make this region unforgettable.

Travel Tannies exists to help other Gen X travelers experience Southeast Asia with the same sense of curiosity and confidence — without spending months trying to figure everything out on their own.

The Story Behind Travel Tannies

Travel Tannies founder at Angkor Temples, Siem Reap Cambodia

From Curious Travelers to Southeast Asia Guides

This photo was taken while exploring the incredible Angkor temple complex in Cambodia. Moments like this are the reason we fell in love with Southeast Asia.

My husband and I have been traveling through Southeast Asia for more than 15 years. Over that time we’ve explored bustling cities, quiet villages, night markets, temples, islands, and places most first‑time visitors don’t even know exist.

When we first started visiting the region we made plenty of mistakes — booking the wrong areas, misunderstanding visas, underestimating travel times, and missing amazing experiences simply because we didn't know about them.

Travel Tannies was created so other travelers — especially Gen X explorers who value meaningful travel experiences — can benefit from what we've learned along the way.

Instead of travel feeling overwhelming, it becomes exciting again.

If you'd ever like personal help planning your route or itinerary, you're welcome to book a relaxed travel planning session. Think of it as chatting with someone who's already been there.

Mistakes We Made in Southeast Asia (So You Don't Have To)

When my husband and I first started traveling through Southeast Asia more than 15 years ago, we made plenty of mistakes. Some were small, some cost us time, and some meant we missed incredible experiences. The good news is that you don't have to learn everything the hard way.

Trying to See Too Many Places

On our early trips we tried to squeeze too many destinations into one itinerary. Southeast Asia looks close together on a map, but travel days can quickly disappear between flights, ferries and long transfers.

Booking the Wrong Area

The first time we visited some destinations we booked accommodation in the wrong part of town simply because we didn't understand the layout. Where you stay can completely change your experience.

Underestimating Travel Times

What looks like a short journey can easily become a full travel day when you add airport transfers, delays and connections. Now we always build breathing room into our itineraries.

Missing Incredible Experiences

Some of the most memorable experiences we discovered later were things we didn't even know existed on our first trips — hidden temples, night markets, local villages and ethical elephant sanctuaries.

Packing the Wrong Things

We quickly learned that Southeast Asia travel requires light clothing, good walking shoes, mosquito protection and practical travel gear.

Not Understanding Visa Rules Early

Visa rules vary between countries. Some require e‑visas, others allow visa‑free entry. Checking requirements early prevents stress before your trip.

Travel Tannies exists so you can enjoy the magic of Southeast Asia without having to learn everything the hard way like we did.

Places I've Explored in Southeast Asia

Bophut Fisherman's Village Koh Samui Thailand

Koh Samui, Thailand

This photo was taken at Bophut Fisherman's Village in Koh Samui, one of Thailand’s most relaxed island destinations. The area is famous for its seaside restaurants, night markets, and beautiful views across the Gulf of Thailand.

Koh Samui is a fantastic stop on a Thailand island‑hopping itinerary. Many travelers combine it with destinations like Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands.

If you'd like help planning the perfect Thailand island route, you can book a travel planning session and get a custom itinerary.

Doi Suthep Temple Chiang Mai Thailand

Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai – Thailand

This photo was taken at the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai, one of the most iconic temples in northern Thailand. The temple sits high on a mountain overlooking the city and is known for its stunning golden stupa.

Chiang Mai is a favorite destination for travelers who love culture, temples, food markets and mountain scenery. It’s also the gateway to exploring northern Thailand.

If you're planning a Thailand trip and want help designing the perfect route between Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands, you can book a travel planning session.

Legend Elephant Sanctuary Chiang Mai Thailand

Elephant Sanctuary, Chiang Mai – Thailand

This photo was taken at the beautiful Legend Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai. Northern Thailand is famous for ethical elephant sanctuaries where visitors can observe and interact with rescued elephants in a responsible way.

Experiences like this are often highlights of a Thailand itinerary. Many travelers combine Chiang Mai's temples, mountain scenery and elephant sanctuaries with island destinations like Phuket or Koh Samui.

If you'd like help planning a Thailand trip that includes Chiang Mai, temples, nature and islands, you can book a travel planning session.

Halong Bay cruise Vietnam

Ha Long Bay Cruise – Vietnam

This photo was taken during a cruise through the spectacular Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam, one of Southeast Asia’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thousands of limestone karst islands rise from emerald water, creating one of the most dramatic landscapes in the world. Most travelers visit Ha Long Bay from Hanoi and spend one or two nights on a traditional cruise boat.

If you'd like help planning a Vietnam itinerary that includes Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Hoi An, you can book a travel planning session.
